Margaret Gill: Sea Change Expert

Individual

I recently asked a bunch of city slickers what they would most miss if they had to do a sea change. Having done mine with little or no thought for what could go wrong I found the answers interesting because it's a pretty good summary of all the things that I did experience at some stage during my sea change.

My programs let you discover why you are making the move and how you can get the most positive experiences from the move without being stressed and unhappy during the first few years. Yes- it can take that long to adjust to a sea change after living in the city for extended periods.

If you are seeking a sea change and you are doing it unsupported these are the types of areas in which I can help you before you go, or if you are already there and are experiencing these things first hand, I can help you with the transition. You can get used to it and it does get better - how do I know, because I've lived it.

Here are some of the answers:

- Losing touch with/missing my friends

- Not being able to go out/eat out/have a cosmopolitan type social life

- Diminished access to bookshops, clothes shops, music shops, cafes etc

- Finding new, like-minded friends

- Harder to access air transport to visit interstate friends & family.

- Getting paid less because its out of a main city.

- Do they have good coffee?

- What about Tsunamis?

- What would you wear to the office - a suit or beach shorts

- Will I get less money as it would be cheaper to live there

- I would fear missing my friends and my "city lifestyle

- What would I do on the weekend?

- Fear of isolation, of starting again somewhere

- Actually putting oneself in the uncomfort zone.

- Would miss silly things  - every day things, the familiar. (to be honest probably take for granted and a lot unnoticed)

- Learning and exploring new neighbourhoods, getting geographically orientated...

- I would miss looking at thousands of cute men, the hustle and bustle, the pulse, the edge, the diversity, the usual I would miss variety - of shops, cafes, types of people in the street, opinions.

- I would miss good broadband connection! mobile phone coverage, proximity to events

- Not finding anyone interesting.

- I'd miss familiarity and comfort I'd be scared that I wouldn't be accepted by the locals, that I'd have to make it work or I'd feel like a failure, so that would put more pressure on me and I'd feel stressed by that.

- I'd feel stressed that I would have to start again, making friends and building contacts, wondering who I could trust and rely on.

- I'd miss the beach (like I do in Melbourne, after moving from Sydney),

- I'd miss the abundance of fresh produce and my village baker….and the familiarity of things.

- I'd miss the views of home, the trees and the buildings that inspire me.

- Can I survive financially?

- Will my social support network be working at a distance?

- How long will it take before I feel at home?

- Will people be open-minded?

- Will I be able to open myself?

I have been through many of these scenarios myself and can give you the support and direction you need to get through all this.

Client Testimonial

I used Margaret Gill to help me make a sea change to the Mid North Coast of NSW after living in Sydney for 35 years. During our time together I felt that Margaret was able to focus my energies on achieving my dream with real and useful everyday strategies. During our time together I felt challenged, not intimidated and supported, not smothered. My sea change occurred within 12 months. I have a job paying MORE than I was earning in Sydney, have just bought a lovely house, acquired a dog and a cat and MY HEART IS SINGING!"
